Medical Training Initiative

An option for international doctors to work in the UK without sitting an exam for up to two years.

The Medical Training Initiative (MTI) is a UK scheme that allows a fixed number of international medical graduates to work and train within the NHS for a maximum of 24 months.

The primary purpose of the MTI scheme is to contribute to improving the quality of healthcare in developing countries. Therefore, the allocation of MTI placements is given in priority order.

The scheme aims to share knowledge, experience, and best practice that benefits:

  • The international doctor, who gets training and development from the NHS
  • Their home country, to which they return with knowledge, skills and experience
  • And the NHS, which has spare training capacity filled by suitable graduate doctors.

How will a doctor benefit from MTI?

As MTI trainee doctors will receive speciality training supervised by a qualified NHS consultant. In most instances, the training plan is tailored to suit their educational objectives and the work they wish to undertake on returning home.Royal Colleges will sponsor GMC registration and visa application.

Doctors will receive the same salary as a UK doctor unless they have funding from their home country.

Do I qualify for MTI?

Before applying, applicants must have:

  • Suitable advanced postgraduate qualifications which will be considered in the context of their other skills and experience
  • An IELTS or an OET result at accepted grade,
  • Worked in a clinical practice setting for 3 of the past 5 years, including continuously in the last 12 months
  • 12 months’ experience in the speciality you are applying for
  • Primary medical qualification independently verified by the ECFMG

Where can I work and for how long?

Royal Colleges recruit trainees for placements all over the UK. While they can place trainees in most specialities, they cannot always guarantee that a suitable placement will be found in all specialities. Placements are for a minimum of 6 months up to 2 years.

Upon completion of MTI trainees receive a certificate from the College confirming that they have undertaken an International Training Fellowship in the speciality and a letter outlining the competencies they have gained experience in.

How do I apply?

How long does it take?
