General Medical Council (GMC)
The General Medical Council (GMC) is a public institution that maintains the official register of all doctors at any position from GP to consultant within the United Kingdom. Its primary duty is to “protect, promote and maintain the health and safety of the public” by managing entry to the register or license, and suspending or removing members when required. It is a serious criminal offense to make a false claim of membership or practicing as a doctor without a GMC license.
It also regulates the standards for medical schools (therefore indirectly controlling medical education programs’ contents) in the UK.

Although most of the specialist physicians in England work under the umbrella of the NHS (National Health Service), some specialist physicians provide professional services from private sector health institutions. However, to be able to work in the private or public sector (NHS) to provide health services according to UK law, you only need to be licensed by the GMC. The GMC license is a requirement for all physicians, British or non-British citizens, regardless of where they completed their medical training (for GP) or residency training (for specialists). This means, the GMC license is even a requirement for British citizen doctors who have completed their medical education and/or residency training in the UK.
